Milliken also known as Milliken Mills neighborhood is to the North West of Scarborough. Originally it was known as Milliken’s Corners, named after Norman Milliken who settled there in 1807. It is a neighborhood in Toronto City, bounded to the north by 14th Avenue E, to the East by Markham road, to the south by Finch Avenue E and to the west by Warden Road. This neighborhood was a farming community, a practice that it gave up in the 1980s.
The population is largely made up of Chinese contingency, who account for over 60 percent of the population. The Chinese language is spoken at home as the first language with 35 percent of the population.
Recreation can be done in the Milliken Park, and Goldhawk Park which are nice green spaces for picnics and social gatherings. In Milliken Park is a banquet hall and gazebos. There is a modern public library in the neighborhood called the Goldhawk Park Public Library, where there are outdoor areas for baseball diamonds, basketball courts and kids’ playing field.
Shopping is done in the Milliken Wells Shopping Plaza off McCowan Road. Here there is a supermarket, Chinese retailer shops, vegetarian shops, food markets, herbal store, video store and restaurants. There are about five public schools, a public high school and three catholic schools.
The homes here are mainly family owned. They are homes that were built in the 1980s and 1990s as two storied with garage since these was a farming community. Most homes are single detached homes. The houses are family style and small to medium size. There are also townhouses and condominium apartments in McCowan road as well as Alton Towers Drive.
