This is a scenic neighbourhood in Scarborough, Toronto. The area is characterized by winding roads and towering trees making have a feel of a cottage country atmosphere. It is a family oriented community that runs a ‘Family Day’ every September, hosts New Year dances and valentine dances at the West Rouge Community Centre. This neighbourhood was originally farmland in the 1920s. The development of residential homes in West Rouge began in the 1940s and individual homeowners purchased lots. The pieces of lands were then developed in the 1950s through to the 1960s and 1970s. Later on in the 1980s more homes were constructed once the Rouge Hills Golf and Country Club was sold.
The houses in West Rouge were built in the 1920s mostly along the Rouge Hills Drive. The homes are a variation of bungalows, two storey, and Tudor style and split level homes of the 50s, 60s and 70s. Newer homes were constructed in the 1980s through to the 1990s. In the Lawrence Avenue the area is a waterfront village which has semi-detached houses and townhouses. These homes have garages positioned off laneways making them have a pleasing streetscape and architectural beauty.
There are various areas to do shopping in the West Rouge area. One such place is the West Rouge plaza located at Port Union Road. This plaza has a bakery, furniture store, billiards, a hair salon, professional offices and a sports bar. Other great places to shop are the Centennial plaza at Port Union and Lawrence Avenue north west corner and the Ravine Park Plaza at Port Union Road where one can get household needs.
Recreational areas are in the West Rouge neighbourhood are the West Rouge Community centre, West Rouge Sports and Recreation Association and West Rouge Soccer Club. There are three public schools and one public high school in West Rouge. Most residents can access the Rouge Hill Go Station by foot while motorists can access the Highway 401 from Port Union Road.
